BackBeat were formed in 2014 from a diverse band of like-minded musicians. We decided to develop a substantial set of songs which would have been played by bands in the early 1960s; not necessarily all written in the 60s. For example, songs included are by Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochrane, Elvis and other 1950s acts, but all bands at that time (including The Beatles) played these ‘standards’ as part of their live sets.
Bill Bennett – on guitar and vocals – played in bands in the early 1960s and it is from this base that BackBeat’s repertoire was established. So songs by The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, Dave Clarke, The Searchers, The Everly Brothers, Manfred Mann, Johnny Kidd, Cliff and The Shadows, as well as The Beatles, are all included.
Frank Manning – on bass and vocals – is the band’s elder statesman and has played in many bands from the 60s onwards, in an eclectic mix of styles, including country, rock, blues etc.
Mike Gore – on percussion – is the band’s youngest member and started playing drums at school. He has played in many choral groups as well as LOUD bands and duos. He always wanted to play 60s music so being in BackBeat is a perfect place for Mike to be today.
Nigel Ferguson – on guitar and vocals – just wants to play live music! This band is his first real experience of playing with others, and although his heart probably lies with the 70s genre (nothing a good therapist can’t fix!) he enjoys the simple, clear sixties sound so BackBeat is a perfect place for him to develop his playing and singing.
So... we have authentic credentials, good sound equipment and good instruments, so when we play people like the results; in fact they are often surprised at how good we DO sound. We have enough songs to play for around three hours without repeating any material, although the audience often insist that we do!
